Construction Industry Scheme

CIS tax refunds in Bournemouth

Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors take tax off your pay before it reaches you - and it is very often more than you actually owe. We reclaim the difference for subcontractors across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, and keep contractors compliant with their monthly returns.

Who this is for

  • Subcontractors who have 20% (or 30% if unverified) deducted from every payment
  • Bricklayers, groundworkers, carpenters, electricians, plasterers, roofers, plant operators and labourers
  • Self-employed tradespeople working for multiple contractors across Dorset
  • Contractors who pay subcontractors and must file monthly CIS returns
  • Anyone registered at the 30% rate who should be verified and moved to 20%

What's included - subcontractors

  • We collect and check your CIS payment and deduction statements for the year
  • Tools, materials, protective clothing, mileage, van costs, insurance and training claimed in full
  • Your self assessment return prepared with the CIS deductions correctly credited
  • The refund calculated and claimed, and paid straight into your bank account by HMRC
  • Verification sorted if you are being taxed at 30% because you were never registered properly
  • Missing statements chased with the contractor so nothing is left off the claim

What's included - contractors

  • Registration as a contractor with HMRC
  • Subcontractor verification before you pay anyone
  • Monthly CIS returns filed on time, every month
  • Deduction statements issued to your subcontractors
  • CIS and PAYE reconciled so the two never drift apart

How it works

  1. Send us your statements

Your CIS statements, invoices and expense records for the tax year - photos of paperwork are fine. If statements are missing we chase the contractor.

  2. We calculate the refund

We add up what you were paid, what was deducted and what you actually owe once expenses and your personal allowance are applied. You see the figure before anything is filed.

  3. HMRC pays you

We file the return and the refund goes directly to your bank account. Most refunds arrive within a few weeks of filing, and we chase HMRC if one is slow.

Deadlines, penalties and how much you might get back

Refunds are claimed through the self assessment return, so the deadline is 31 January after the end of the tax year. You can file from 6 April, and the earlier you file the earlier you are paid - there is no advantage whatsoever in waiting.

You can normally claim back up to four previous tax years, so if you have never claimed, there may be several years of refunds waiting. Contractors filing monthly returns face a £100 penalty the day a return is late, rising steeply after two, six and twelve months.

Refund sizes vary with your income and expenses, but subcontractors taxed at 20% on every payment frequently have several hundred to several thousand pounds sitting with HMRC. We will tell you what your figure looks like before you commit to anything.

Common questions

How long does a CIS refund take?

Once the return is filed, HMRC usually pays within two to four weeks, sometimes faster. Delays normally mean HMRC wants a security check; we deal with that for you.

Can I claim for previous years?

Yes, generally the last four tax years. If you have never filed a return for those years we can put that right at the same time.

What can I claim as expenses?

Tools and equipment, protective clothing, materials you paid for, mileage or van running costs, public liability insurance, phone use, accountancy fees, and training. We go through it with you so nothing legitimate is left out.

Why am I being taxed 30% instead of 20%?

That is the unverified rate - it means you are not properly registered with HMRC, or the contractor could not verify you. We fix the registration and you move to 20%, and the extra already deducted comes back in the refund.

Do you work with contractors as well as subcontractors?

Yes. We handle contractor registration, monthly CIS returns, verification and deduction statements for construction businesses across Bournemouth and Poole.
