VAT returns in Bournemouth

VAT is one of the easiest taxes to get wrong and one of the most expensive when you do. We advise businesses across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch on whether and when to register, pick the scheme that costs you least, and file accurate MTD-compliant returns every quarter.

Who this is for

  • Businesses approaching the registration threshold and unsure what to do
  • Newly registered businesses filing their first return
  • Established VAT-registered businesses who want it off their desk
  • Construction businesses dealing with the domestic reverse charge
  • Anyone who has had a VAT assessment, penalty or inspection letter

What's included

  • Advice on whether to register, and whether registering voluntarily would help
  • Registration with HMRC and your VAT number obtained
  • The right scheme chosen - standard, Flat Rate, cash accounting or annual accounting
  • Quarterly returns prepared from your records and filed under MTD
  • Input VAT checked so you reclaim everything you are entitled to
  • The construction reverse charge applied correctly
  • Deregistration handled if your turnover falls

How it works

  1. Register or review

If you are not registered we check whether you need to be. If you are, we review the scheme you are on - a lot of businesses are on the wrong one and paying for it.

  2. Quarterly returns

Your records come to us, we prepare and check the return, show you the figure and file it through MTD-compatible software.

  3. No surprises

We tell you what is due and when so the payment never lands unexpectedly, and we watch your turnover against the threshold if you are near it.

Thresholds, deadlines and penalties

You must register once VAT-taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling twelve months, or if you expect to exceed it in the next thirty days alone. This is a rolling test, not a tax-year one, which is what catches businesses out.

Returns and payment are due one month and seven days after the end of each VAT quarter. HMRC's points-based system gives you a penalty point for each late return and a £200 penalty once you hit the threshold, with late payment penalties and interest on top.

All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file through compatible software under MTD for VAT. If you are not set up for that, we will sort it as part of taking you on.

Common questions

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your VAT-taxable turnover passes £90,000 over any rolling twelve-month period, or when you expect to pass it within the next thirty days. Registration is due within thirty days of that point.

Is the Flat Rate Scheme worth it?

Sometimes. It simplifies the return and can save money for businesses with few purchases, but if you buy a lot of goods or services you will usually be better off on the standard scheme. We compare both on your actual figures.

Should I register voluntarily?

It can be worth it if your customers are VAT-registered businesses and you have significant input VAT to reclaim. If you sell mainly to the public it usually just makes you 20% more expensive.

What is the reverse charge in construction?

For most construction services between VAT-registered businesses, the customer accounts for the VAT instead of the supplier. It changes your invoices and your cash flow, and it is frequently applied incorrectly.

What if I have made mistakes on past returns?

Errors can usually be corrected, either on the next return or by disclosure to HMRC. Voluntary correction is always treated far more favourably than waiting to be found.
