Making Tax Digital

Making Tax Digital in Bournemouth

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax changes how self-employed people and landlords report to HMRC: digital records, and an update every quarter instead of one return a year. We move clients across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch onto it calmly, well before their deadline.

Who this is for

  • Self-employed people with turnover over the MTD threshold
  • Landlords whose rental income takes them over the threshold
  • Anyone with combined self-employment and rental income above it
  • Businesses already in MTD for VAT who now face MTD for Income Tax as well
  • People still keeping records in a paper ledger or a shoebox

What's included

  • A check of whether and when MTD actually applies to you
  • The right MTD-compatible software chosen and set up - not the most expensive one
  • Your records moved across and your opening position agreed
  • Bank feeds connected so transactions arrive automatically
  • Training so you are comfortable, or we keep the records for you
  • Quarterly updates prepared and submitted to HMRC
  • The final declaration at the end of the year, replacing the old tax return

How it works

  1. Check your date

Thresholds and start dates differ by income level. We work out exactly when you are caught, which for many people is later than they feared.

  2. Get set up early

Software chosen, records migrated, bank feeds connected and a dry run done - ideally a full quarter before your start date, so the first real submission is uneventful.

  3. Quarterly, then final

Four updates through the year and a final declaration afterwards. We prepare and file them, and tell you what your tax position looks like as the year goes rather than at the end.

The timetable

April 2026: MTD for Income Tax becomes mandatory for self-employed people and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000.

April 2027: the threshold drops to £30,000. April 2028: it drops again to £20,000, which brings in a very large number of small businesses and single-property landlords.

Quarterly updates are due one month and five days after each quarter end - 7 August, 7 November, 7 February and 7 May for a standard year - with the final declaration by the following 31 January. MTD for VAT already applies to all VAT-registered businesses, and we handle that too.

Common questions

Do I have to use software?

Yes. MTD requires digital record-keeping and submissions through compatible software; spreadsheets alone only work with bridging software. We will pick something that fits how you actually work.

Does this replace my tax return?

Effectively yes. Four quarterly updates plus a final declaration replace the single annual return, though the 31 January payment deadline stays as it is.

What counts towards the threshold?

Your gross self-employment and property income combined, before expenses. Two £30,000 sources add up to £60,000 and put you in from April 2026.

What if I am under the threshold?

Then nothing changes yet, but the threshold falls in 2027 and again in 2028. Moving to digital records early is painless; being forced to do it in a rush is not.

Can you just do it all for me?

Yes. Plenty of clients send us their paperwork and we keep the digital records and file everything. MTD does not have to mean you do more work.
