How it works
-
Free consultation
We talk through your income, your records and anything you're unsure about. There is no charge and no obligation, in our Bournemouth office, by phone or by video.
-
You send us your figures
A fixed fee is agreed up front. You send bank statements, invoices, CIS statements or a spreadsheet - whatever you have. We chase what's missing and ask questions if something doesn't add up.
-
We file and you relax
We prepare the return, show you the numbers before anything is submitted, and file it with HMRC once you are happy. You get a copy, a payment reminder and a person to call if HMRC writes to you.
Deadlines and penalties
The online filing deadline is 31 January following the end of the tax year on 5 April. Miss it and HMRC charges an automatic £100 penalty even if you owe no tax at all. After three months that grows by £10 a day, and further penalties and interest follow at six and twelve months.
Tax owed is also due by 31 January, and if your bill is over £1,000 you will usually be asked for payments on account towards next year's tax - half on 31 January and half on 31 July. This catches a lot of first-time filers out, so we tell you the full picture as soon as we have your figures rather than in the last week of January.
We aim to have client returns finished by the autumn. That gives you months of notice about what you owe, and time to spread the cost.
Common questions
Do I need to file a self assessment return?
Usually yes if you were self-employed and earned more than £1,000, if you received rental income, if you are a company director with dividends, or if HMRC has sent you a notice to file. If you are not sure, ask us - it takes five minutes to check and it is free.
How much does a tax return cost?
We quote a fixed fee before we start, based on how complicated your affairs are, and it does not change afterwards. Book a free consultation and we will tell you the number up front.
I have several years outstanding. Can you help?
Yes. Late returns are common and very fixable. We file the outstanding years, deal with HMRC on your behalf and, where there is a reasonable excuse, help you appeal penalties.
I am a CIS subcontractor - is this the same thing?
It is the same return, but CIS work has its own rules and usually ends in a refund rather than a bill. See our page on CIS tax refunds.
Do I have to come to the office in Bournemouth?
No. Plenty of clients in Poole, Christchurch and further out in Dorset send everything by email and never visit. You are very welcome to come in if you would rather do it face to face.
